How can my elderly parents get their older dog with bad arthritis up the staircase with no one getting hurt?

Posted by admin on October 4th, 2013 — Posted in Lift Sling

They cannot carry her up (she weighs around 30 pounds) They have tried the sling method around her abdomen but she just goes completely limp (scared I think) I appreciate any help someone could give me.
She is getting cortisone shots from the vet but cannot tolerate the oral meds. My parents love this dog so much. I would go and lift her for them every morning and night if I could but I have Multiple Sclerosis and cannot physically do it. Logically I know she can sleep downstairs…..but she has always slept with my parents and the idea of upsetting her and having her cry at night is just more than my mom and dad can stand. she does ok walking flat surfaces….I might buy them a rear harness and see if we can help her this way. i appreciate the help you all have given me.

They sell rear lift harnesses, could help:

Is the dog on any kind of pain medication and joint supplement for her arthritis? An NSAID like Rimadyl could help, and there are lots of joint supplements available, just make sure it has glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM in it.

If the harnesses don’t work, it’s probably best to just leave her downstairs from now on. Better than risking her, or your parents, falling and getting seriously injured.

How would you sew a strong cloak for sword fighting?

Posted by admin on October 4th, 2013 — Posted in Nylon Sling

I have a few templates and some experience sewing costumes, and after taking a rapier and dagger class, I realized that another interesting way to fight onstage is with a cloak and rapier. To do this, I would need to sew something strong that also functions as it normally would if it were worn. What materials would you use and where would you reinforce a cloak meant to be both worn and fought with?

Rapier/Cloak is probably my favorite weapon combination and I have made cloaks for this purpose. My favorite fighting cloak I’ve been using for over 10 years without any issue, so the ones I’ve made have really stood up well to abuse (several productions of The Three Musketeers as well as fight demos and practicing).

They’re not really difficult to make. The main thing that could be an issue is a center seam. Because of the forces at play when you swing the cloak around, many cloaks will start to split down the middle. Knowing this, either make a cloak without a center seam, or just really reinforce the center seam by going over it with the sewing machine a couple of times, especially at the top of the cloak.

As for fabric – just pick something with a decent weight to it. Something that would hang nicely when you wear it. Depending on what look you’re going for and what you’re looking for in terms of care needs (dry cleaning vs. washer/dryer) you can use anything from cotton to velvet.

For a pattern, you can create your own – doing a half circle with a neck hole. Or you can take a look at capes and cloak patterns from companies like Simplicity, Butterick, and McCalls.

Maybe one of these (watch out for the center seams on these): http://www.simplicity.com/p-5403-mens-costumes.aspx#t-0

I like to tie on my cloak, rather than have a frog closure, so I can have my cape over one shoulder and tied under the other arm. I usually use a semi-wide heavy ribbon or nylon tie – and I sew it all along the top of the cloak (across the neck) – so it’s one piece instead of two pieces sewn just on the front. One piece sewn onto the cloak on both the top and the bottom of the ribbon will help keep it strong. But if you don’t like the way it looks aesthetically, just be sure to sew the ties on very well – and check them before performances.

Out of curiosity, where did you take the cloak & rapier class? Did you go to Summer Sling?

is marble fragile, can I sling it?

Posted by admin on September 6th, 2013 — Posted in Lift Sling

I have a 2000lb marble sculpture laying on its back. it is a waterfall and is 8 ft tall. can I sling it and pick it up set it on a deck, move it and stand it up? It has little parts of the carvings protruding out around the front and sides.

yes iff you know what you are doing iff not i suggest you get somebody that does this is a very heavy piece and one mistake in lifting and placing it safetley to its eventual resting place requires a good deal of knollege and awareness in what one is doing it only takes one mistake to damage this lovely piece if i were you i would not take any chances leave it to the experts you will be covered by their insurance if things go wrong it sounds like a lovely piece of craftmans ship good for you for having it good luck martin

How to get a sling on a swivels?

Posted by admin on September 6th, 2013 — Posted in Nylon Sling

really dumb question here, I am trying a put a sling on my Marlin 795 and i can not for the life of me figure it out how to get the sling on the swivels. The swivels I have are Uncle mikes QD Super Swivel with Tri-lock. And the sling is a Butler creek Easy rider sling. I have no idea what to do i tried looking it up and the sling came with some instructions but they are to confession for me to understand.

Dont feel embarassed. We have all been there. I have military slings on my match rifles and the only reason I can get them back on – I have another gun in the safe I can look at.

First thing – check to make sure the swivels are the correct width. The sling material should go in and not be folded over.

Second – the short end goes to the front swivel and the long end goes to the back stock swivel.

That front swivel – the short in goes in backwards from what you might first think. Because you want that padding facing downward so when you carry it the padding it between you and the sling nylon strap. If you install it so it looks nice – it will cut your shoulder when carrying it all day. Some QD sling studs and swivels can actually swivel around without unscrewing from the stock – if your does, lucky you – you can pretty much put it on any way you want and make it look nice and carry right by a simple twist.

That rear long strap – is suspose to be adjustable so you can have some slack to carry and instantly let our more to wrap around your left hand and offer support when shooting off hand, kneeling or sitting. This will always be trial and error – or – it has been for me.

Good luck. Dont feel bad.
